Westcreek/Pemberton

The Westcreek School served students in the southwestern corner of Douglas County for over 70 years. Photo taken June 2000. Douglas County History Research Center.

.....Westcreek or Pemberton (District 27) is the southernmost community along Highway 67 in western Douglas County. The school appears to have been established in September of 1896, when the town saw tremendous growth due to mining activity. The school still stands, a few miles south of Deckers, on a dirt road west of Highway 67, on the west side of the road in a pasture. The school is currently painted green and has a tin roof.

.....The school was one of the last to remain open, remaining open well into the 1960's. When the school did close, students were sent to Woodland Park, about 12 miles away. The Douglas County News weekly column on the Platte River Valley by Mrs. Franklin Doud 2 September 1965 indicates that the school has closed recently and the piano that had been purchased with "pie and box socials over a number of years" for the community had gone with it. The school was the site of a recent (in 1965 ) 4-H picnic as well. It is not known whether the Westcreek community ever regained their piano.
