Larkspur (District 15)

The first school to serve the Larkspur area was actually built south of the town on the Carr Lamb Ranch around 1884. Between 1887 and 1889 the wooden frame school was moved closer to town near the Arfsten's property. In 1890, a tornado hit the area, wiping out the school. The town voted to build a new brick school in 1896, and the building is still standing, although it has now been converted into offices.

Throughout the 20th century, the school remained a vital part of the community, Sunday school, social clubs, school concerts and town meetings occurred in the building. Sometime in the 1920's a stage was built in the school, then in 1952 a gymnasium and a lunch room were added. In 1960, the school became purely an elementary school, as the 7th and 8th graders were sent to the new Junior High School in Castle Rock.

The district has had a fairly large enrollment compared to other schools of its size. In 1886, there were 14 students, by 1890 there were 34. In 1992 there were 192 students in grades K-12.

In 1972 a new school was built (during the development of Perry Park) and the older building was sold in 1975. Since then, it has had a variety of owners and has been put to several uses. The school was even offered to the town of Larkspur at one point for use as a town hall/community center, but those plans fell through in the late 1980's.

Stone Canyon (District 15)

The Stone Canyon School is also listed in some sources as District #15. It sat south west of Larkspur on the west side of Highway 105, a little more than one mile south of Fox Farm Road. It was a frame building and was still standing (though no longer used as a school) in 1947, as one resident of Larkspur lived there with her husband. By 1978 it was gone. The children who attended school there may have attended Larkspur after its closing.
